Look at the union low budget agreements even if this is non-union. They give you a number to anchor against and it is usually a shock to the producer that you know them.

Ask what the total budget is. If they will not say, that is the answer.

Producer here. If we cannot pay properly we should be honest that we are asking you for a favor, and we should be offering something real in exchange. Footage, a credit that means something, food that is not terrible.

I have done these and some were worth it. The ones that were worth it had a director whose next film I wanted to be in.
