I added up what I spent on this last year and I feel slightly sick

Headshots, class, two subscriptions, submissions, a reel edit, union dues. It came to more than four thousand and I earned about two.

Is that a normal year three or is that a sign I am doing this badly?

    That is a completely normal year three and almost nobody publishes those numbers, which is why it feels shameful. It is not.

    The useful exercise is not the total, it is which line items produced anything. Class and the reel edit probably did. Two subscriptions probably did not.

    Track it every year. The point at which it flips is the point at which this becomes a job, and you cannot see the flip coming if you are not counting.

    I was net negative for six years. Year seven I paid for everything and had money left. Nobody tells you how long the runway is.

    Also, all of that is deductible. If you are not tracking it for tax you are paying for it twice.
