The reader I paid was worse than my flatmate

Forty dollars for someone who read the lines like a hostage. My flatmate has no training and gives me more to work with.

Is paying for a reader actually worth it, or is a good untrained friend fine?

A good untrained friend who is reliable beats a bad paid reader every time. The only thing you are really buying is consistency and availability at 11pm on a Sunday.

The skill in a reader is being present without pulling focus, and it is rarer than you would think. Some very good actors are terrible readers.

I have used the same reader for four years. She is not an actor. She is just extremely good at looking at me and meaning it.

Worth saying that some paid readers are excellent and worth every penny. You found a bad one. Ask around for a recommendation rather than picking off a listing.
