I keep seeing it on breakdowns. How much difference does it make?

Enormous. It means the production does not pay for travel or housing, which on a day player role is often more than the fee itself.

For small roles it is frequently the deciding factor between two equally good tapes.

Be honest about it though. Claiming local hire and then asking about accommodation is a good way to be remembered badly.

You can be local hire in a city you do not live in if you genuinely have somewhere to stay and can get there. Plenty of people are local in two markets.
