Honestly it is slightly outdated advice now. A lot of "the room" is a self-tape and the equivalent skill is making a tape that gets watched to the end.

The modern version is: get in front of the same people repeatedly. That happens through a class taught by someone with casting relationships, through workshops where casting attends, and through booking small things and not being difficult on them.
