Honest answers welcome even if the answer is depressing.

Depressing answer: often no. First scene, sometimes first twenty seconds, and then a decision.

It depends enormously on the stage. Early wide search, no. Shortlist, absolutely, several times, often with other people in the room.

This is why the first line matters so much and why the "warming up into it" approach fails. You do not get the runway.

I work in a casting office. On a big call we might have four hundred tapes for one co-star. The math does not allow for watching all of every one, and pretending otherwise does not help anybody.
