Balancing survival job with auditions/roles by peacesignz  •  last post Feb 2nd

Hi All! I'm new to acting and have recently gotten a couple of auditions. However, I've had to decline some due to audition or shooting day conflicts with my day job. At this point, I'm gonna take the plunge and commit to acting. But of course, I have to pay rent. I know that actors are notorious for being waitresses and waiters -- is that really flexible? I know someone whose had a few restaurant jobs and they aren't able to change shifts too often for auditions. What are your experiences balancing your survival job and auditions?

(TORONTO) I'm Interviewing a group of Casting Directors and Agents. Is there anything specific you want to know? by Josiahcrocker  •  last post Feb 2nd

I write for my own site which helps actors (primarily newer ones, but we're expanding into more in depth topics soon) and I'm going to be interviewing a group of directors and agents about the industry. Things that actors may not know, or think about, or just sage kind of advice. Is there anything any of you would want to know straight from the horse's mouth? I will gladly add it to my list and post the answers when I get them!

Schools in LA for no experience beginner by Chinhnnguyen  •  last post Jan 31st

Long story short I wanted to give acting a shot. Never been theater when I was in high school or college, but the feeling of wanting to give it a try has grown on me. Call it mid-life crisis lol. In any case I am looking for recommendations for acting schools that will teach a n00b to act in film/tv. Whenever I google for something this list of schools shows up often https://www.backstage.com/advice-for-actors/resources/top-acting-schools-los-angeles/ Anybody got any advice if these would be a good start? If so which one and if you have any other recs. Thanks!

Senior year woes by epichvs  •  last post Jan 31st

Senior year sucks dick. The people in my life go on and on about how being an actor won't get me anywhere and that I'd be better off chasing something more practical etc. But being an actor is all that's on my mind. This post is going to seem incredibly stupid and naive to you older folks, but I'm having an internal decision making struggle. My grades are terrible, I've missed early decision deadlines, and am only missing more as the weeks to my graduation trudge on. I've had sleepless nights where I've attempted to clear my mind and think thoroughly about what I'm going to do with my life, but I can never land on a definitive set of steps to take. Is going to a university even worth it to pursue an acting career? I live in the Denver metro area, should I use my money to buy headshots and just audition everywhere I can until I find an agent? My adventurous spirit tells me to throw myself into the scene with my high school theatre training and see where it takes me, but the logical side of me knows how reckless that is. I don't know what to do, where to start, or how to process this crazy sudden life change. Please, someone either snap me out of it or help me figure out where my life is heading.

Open Casting Call. 1-31-18. 10am. Orange County, CA by Arsinik  •  last post Jan 31st

We're hosting an open call for male and female actors for a short social media promotional video. If selected, this is a paid gig ($50/hr) and will probably take 3 hours to film. Filming will take place next week in Anaheim Hills, Ca. The dialogue is minimal (2-3 lines per actor), so nothing to be intimidated by if you're just a beginner. I will say that our client prefers a clean cut, professional look for both female and male candidates. If you're interested and can make it tomorrow (1-31-18) at 10am, please send me a PM and I'll give you the address. It's an on-camera read, so please show up looking as put together as possible. Thanks!

How to get your first co star credit? by futurebro  •  last post Jan 30th

How do you make the jump from student films to tv? I have a reel and would like to stop going out for student films. In my experience student films are generally a waste of my time and the ones that aren't are at the competitive level of anything else (NYU, Columbia, etc). So with a reel and no agent how do I get my first co star. They don't really put casting calls out on AA unless it's a super specific call. So I assume casting goes to their favorite agents to get an actor. Does this mean I need an agent to get an audition? I'm just feeling really stuck at the moment. Seems like I've reached a ceiling for right now.

Actors of reddit, do you have days where it’s especially difficult for you to access your emotions, esp. for emotional scenes? by dashnflash  •  last post Jan 30th

And how do you work through those days? How do you get out of that emotional block?

Newbie disaster by Ghost2678  •  last post Jan 30th

Hello everyone, I'm new here. I've wanted to try acting for YEARS I'm in my early/mid twenties. I live in NYC. I went to a studio today to audit a class and I got soooo intimidated/nervous I just left. I honestly am embarrassed and feel so lame. Everyone seemed so confident and not to mention it was the west village so everyone was good looking as hell. I just feel like I'm never gonna get there and I'm not getting any younger tbh. Just wanted to vent to other Actor's to see if anyone has dealt with this anxiety.... Thanks....

New to LA: Need some advice by urbanaudio  •  last post Jan 30th

Hello All! I just moved to LA about a month ago and I need some advice on what I should be looking at next. I don't have a manager or agent, but I have a reel, headshots, a website, and about 9 student shorts on my resume. Should I be looking to get a manager at the moment? I'm applying to parts everyday on actor's access so that's where I'm at at the moment. Any advice is appreciated :)

Child actor questions - missing school by Murphy223  •  last post Jan 30th

So this is just a forward thinking , fingers crossed, type question. My son has submitted a self tape for a minor speaking role which lead to a call back in person audition. That is scheduled next week so nothing has been offered but I do have some questions? Since this is a mutli-day and possibly few week shoot, How does he legitimately get out of school? For his background / extra work, he's been "sick". (don't tell). But I would want to make sure we get the proper permission or whatever else is needed from the school to make sure he completes his work. Tutors on set? School approved? While he's still a long shot, I Would love to hear what others have done and what the right approach is.

How many of you do this full time? What’s your advice? A known actor doing well told me his best advice was ‘Don’t make it your life’. by chrislabel  •  last post Jan 30th

He said: Don’t make it your life but do some thing creative writing etc on the side.

Acting Dream by Sequoia Rain  •  last post Jan 29th

I think one of my biggest acting dreams would be to star in a Disney Princess movie. I’ve always been told I have the voice for it and Disney is one of my all time favorite things!

Seeking advice by Noreen Quadir  •  last post Jan 29th

Hi, happy to be here on Stage 32. As a young woman of color, I am looking for roles that accurately represent me. I love films that have strong female characters and break away from stereotypes. Does anyone here have suggestions on what films/filmmakers I should watch? I am looking to discover such work and see which filmmakers would be great to collaborate with. Thanks in advance!

Acting without kissing?? by virgomotion  •  last post Jan 29th

My boyfriend of 6 years firmly believes that you can be a successful actor without doing any kissing scenes. I told him that not only would it limit the amount of roles I would get, but it would also cause my agents to possibly drop me. So, who’s right? Edited: corrected grammar and added more info UPDATE: broke up with him.

Is an ispot.tv actor's subscription worth it? by Khanduit48  •  last post Jan 29th

I was lucky enough to book a national commercial that is now airing and when I track it on spot.tv, I see it's up to 400+ National airings. However, this includes national cable buys and, in fact, all the "last aired on" citations have been on cable. Naturally, I'm interested in seeing where the Class A buys are - I suspect the ad company cherry-picked these purchases - but in order to see the specific buys, I need to sign up for the $119/ year membership. Is it worth it? Or can I pretty much ascertain from the free information that the buy, while national, is mainly cable with a only 4-5 Class A buys? All thoughts on the topic are welcome. Thanks!!!

Online auditions......free? by Joy Scott  •  last post Jan 28th

So I've been neck deep in a writing project with my fiancé for a while now, but it's starting to wrap up and we are moving into the getting it sold phase, which means I'm ready to start auditioning. Problem 1 is my "get by job" has a fairly demanding schedule which limits me a bit to online audition submissions. Problem 2 is I'm getting married later this year which puts a major limit on my budget. So. Does anyone know where I can submit online auditions that won't cost? I want to use backstage.com but I can't really legitimize that until after the wedding. Any advice is appreciated
