Getting an Agent by _pretty_in_pink  •  last post Feb 18th

Do you guys have any advice on getting an agent? I submitted my demo reel, headshots, and resume to 4 agents in my area with only one response so far. It’s been a week. Acting is my passion and people tell me I’m truly gifted. It’s what a really want to do. Do you guys have any advice on getting jobs outside of an Agent? I know about backstage, actors access, etc. but anymore suggestions?

I am 6'8 (205 cm). Is there a space for me? by EmergencyShoulder2  •  last post Feb 18th

I'm a tall caucasian male and I speak english and mandarin. Ive been told that im too tall to be an actor. I imagine the height difference with other actors would make a weird aesthetic, and cinematographers would have problems that they dont usually need to deal with. Costume people would have a harder time acquiring large sizes. What might my best move be? Ive always been interested in music and film, and im ready to make a push for that. Acting is my clear first choice, but I'm afraid that pursuit is a lost cause because of my height.

Do actors convey every aspect of their body language with conscious intent? by chromebok  •  last post Feb 18th

I often wonder if actors are deliberate about the minutiae of their body language or if they just imagine themselves to be the character and react without conscious deliberation. For example I was watching the movie Burning by Chang-dong Lee. In one scene the Steven Yeun character is caught yawning inappropriately in a social setting by the Yoo Ah-in character. Steven meets Yoo's gaze. Steven then flashes his eyes at Yoo, smiles, looks down and gives an insouciant shrug. This series of body movements conveys so much about Steven's character, particularly his ease about himself and indifference to what others think of him. When playing this scene, is Steven thinking: "I flash my eyes, then I look down, then I shrug." Or is Steven thinking: "I'm at ease with myself, I'm indifferent to what others think of me," and react accordingly without consciously thinking about his body language?

NYC Area - Actors needed. by kaylerdjs  •  last post Feb 18th

I need actors [TFP] for my first music video. This is a time for print collab out of my own tight pocket, I will provide transportation and food. We will be shooting for maybe 2 days 3-7-20 (sat – sun) subject to change. I need some actors to collaborate for a dramatical dark, thriller type with little action music video. SHE 1: is young adult (20-30), fit (gym body), Asian look. SHE 2: is also young adult/adult (25-35), fit. HE: is an adult 30-40, tall, fit (gym type) She 1 and 2 must feel comfy wearing sensual tight dress and/or lingerie and topless (covered). He must feel comfy shirtless.

how do actors use Instagram to improve their brand/network/ etc? by theactordude77  •  last post Feb 17th

Hello everybody! I constantly hear that branding is important for actors. So I wanted to see what ways you use Instagram to improve your brand? Do you even use it? I think it’s bit complicated because I don’t know what to post. I feel like some people just post high quality pictures of themselves? Is it about following casting directors? Other actors? Etc. Just looking for some guidance here. So ultimately, what are some effective methods to use Instagram as an actor?

Is it difficult to find work as an actor? by Tin_Of_Butter  •  last post Feb 17th

Title says it all really. I live in quite a big city compared to most in the uk so I'm not sure how difficult it would be to find work

I really need your advice .I’m a 16 year old girl from Russia and I want to make a career as an actress. by Iamherenotthereatall  •  last post Feb 17th

I am in a really difficult situation. I want to go to university in the USA. Moreover, in my plans it’s Ticsh and Juilliard. But the information that I found in the internet causes me to doubt. Now I’m absolutely not sure that university entrance is really necessary to make a successful career. On one hand I think it’s invaluable experience and practice for my acting. I want to improve. But I have no idea, if not entering the drama department, what is another way for an actor? Being in Russia is difficult for me to make a decision. What should I do?

Am I in a catch-22? by puddingaroma  •  last post Feb 17th

I feel like I'm a bit stuck. I want to take my acting to the next step but I don't know where to focus on next. I have headshots, I have a bit of work on my reel, I'm on actors access but haven't been getting a ton of auditions. I'm non union and do not have any kind of representation at the moment. I just left my old theatre group because I felt like I had outgrown them so it would be nice to find another challenging but supportive community. I live in NYC and have been thinking about sending out headshots but I don't want to do so unless I'm going to be in a show so they can see me. I just joined Actors Green Room and am planning on doing a workshop once a month. I also am looking around on Meetup. What else can I do?

Should I take a break from acting and see where things go? by daddymonster1  •  last post Feb 17th

It's not that I feel discouraged, it's just that I'm starting to see myself more and more as a writer (whether of books, plays or screenplays) and a film director and I can sense how much more talent and passion I have for these fields. I still like acting and I intend to stay in my theatre club for some more time, but I've been struggling with it more and more lately and I can't tell whu exactly. Is it because I'm starting to see myself less as an actor and am starting to feel out of place? Is it because I can't be open enough in the club properly even though I've spent a year and a half with them? Am I just more cut-out for film acting and musical theatre (I especially have passion for the latter type of acting) and my theatre club's serious and contemporary working style simply isn't compatible with me? I still have love for the craft itself, so I'm really confused about what I should do and where this is all going. What do you think?

Seeking an agent in NYC! Where do I start? by Newbie1  •  last post Feb 16th

Hello, I have been in New York for about a year and have been auditioning as much as I can. I do not have equity and it took me awhile to figure out the entire process, but I think I have it now! I feel that I am in need…

Audition Help Needed by 40belowceo  •  last post Feb 16th

Hello All, Working actor here and been so for several years now on Television & Film but you can never stop learning in this business. I moved out of NYC to NC so now all my auditions are "self tape" auditions. Lately I have been getting audition scenes that has a lot of dialogue between other characters in my scene. There all mostly set in offices and other scenarios where I am not doing anything but standing or sitting around waiting for my lines to come. I always just find myself doing nothing waiting for my lines to come as my characters are not doing anything. Occasionally I may do a head nod or gesture to agree with one character who is talking another. Is there anything else I can do other than staring into the abyss waiting for my lines to come? Any other way to keep or look busy when it is not called for? Any suggestions? Thank you.

Is too much really better than ‘not enough’? by lovelysilentdream  •  last post Feb 16th

I started my major in acting last year、and have learned so much already… as well as recognizing that I have much left to learn. last semester I enrolled in a class that I had such high hopes for、only to be disappointed by a instructor that seemed to belittle me at almost every possible given opportunity. Always ‘forgetting my name’ during class discussions、making it seem as though my questions in class were irrelevant or stupid、and making it clear that he valued other students more than myself. Besides all of this、 during one of our lectures he mentioned that in show business and performance、doing too much on the camera/stage is always better than doing too little because you can always ‘pull it back…’ I have always felt such repugnance towards this idea. and believe me I have thought about it *a lot*… when I get on the stage I like to do as little as possible and only express the emotions/movements that are necessary to convey what is being projected. I feel this way of acting is much more stylish. I am a nervous person by nature but I feel that it is much more liberating to be in control of my movements, rather than spontaneously combust on stage… I’ve seen other actors do ‘too much’ on stage and I just feel like it’s not my style… even if they are able to pull it back. Now my teacher would always try to make me run around the stage or do a fucking backflip and I just never wanted to. You know?Maybe I’m a spoiled brat but it’s not like I’ve ever had this issue with any other instructor. Other instructors know how to direct me without ‘acting out’. I can escalate my performance、that’s not the issue. what do y’all think?

Actors: Please check out my very first film I wrote & acted in & give feedback?? by June_Etoile  •  last post Feb 15th

Hello, as an Indian-American actress I tend to get stereotypes a lot (arranged marriages) so I wanted to create something with my improv training (my true love) and as a first film I'd love to hear your feedback as I continue to create more for myself. We had a great run this year with 40+ festivals and a win for 1st place best comedy short at the Oscars-Qualifying Rhode Island Film Festival. We also received a few best actor wins and audience choice awards. Thank you in advance for any and all feedback! Representation Advice by Anon-i-Muss  •  last post Feb 15th

I'm a 26-year-old actress. I started taking classes and doing theatre when I was 5, and booked my first professional role on stage at 8. I continued performing through high school. In my senior year of high school, I became ill and was forced to take a break from performing for a few years. I got back into it in 2014 and have continued doing theatre as well as small parts in independent films and one small blip on a television show. I want to branch out into doing more film and television, but I feel like I'm stuck. I feel like it's time that I find some representation. I'm based out of Baltimore at the moment, but would love to find an agent and/or manager based in NYC. My friend is also living in Baltimore and working with a manager in NYC, so I know that it's possible. I contacted his management company, they met with me and liked me, but it seemed they only wanted to represent me for theatre, and like I mentioned, I really want to move into film and television. So when I said that I wasn't interested in pursuing theatre at this time, they turned me down. I have years of training and performing under my belt, but every time I submit to an agency or management company I don't hear back. I made sure to have professional headshots, a professionally formatted resume, and education and training to back it all up. I'm just not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Questions? Ask away.

Best ways to network as a new, middle-aged actor in Los Angeles ? by ShayMM  •  last post Feb 15th

I'm currently taking voice acting classes and will soon start up with Improv classes again (both in Hollywood), but I feel I can do more. I'm still new and not yet good enough to do much, but I'd like to be more active among the acting community so that I can learn about roles. Are there facebook groups that led to real-life meetings, for example? I'm also trying to get involved with background acting, commercial acting (not sure how to do this yet) and commercial voice acting. I appreciate all the help!

Controlling your tears? by Neetieoff  •  last post Feb 15th

Hey, do you guys have any advice to cry on purpose naturally? I know that movie actors use menthol, but I need to learn how to cry on command for theater so I can’t exactly use such things :/

VA's on Spotlight by looms123  •  last post Feb 15th

Hi guys So I know the site Spotlight.com is one of the biggest casting sites out there for actors, and it's where the majority of good stuff comes from. I've been in quite a few small projects now, paid and unpaid, but I'm really looking to find something a bit more substantial. To sign up with Spotlight however, you have to confirm that you have at least one years qualification in acting accredited by a certain organisation. I find this appropriate for stage/film actors, but many voice actors do not actually have formal acting qualifications when they start. What can I do to get round this? Or are there any courses I do actually have to do? Or, if you know of any better sites than Spotlight for someone like me in the UK, please let me know! Thank you!
