I wish there were a podcast by a very successful actor on how to be one. by June_Etoile  •  last post May 29th

It's one thing if actors coming-up-the-ranks are making podcasts - good for them. I just wish I could get insights and wisdom from podcasts where actors that are top dogs and A-listers share their secrets/wisdom/tips/advice. I have co-stars, recurrings, guest stars, but I would just love advice from truly up -there actors. Please God make Leonardo DiCaprio or Michael Shannon or Frances McDormand suddenly decide to do a podcast.

Depression meds by YOUR-DEAR-MOTHER  •  last post May 29th

Hey folks, sorry if this has already been discussed... I searched and didn’t find much. I’m a professional actor and my depression has really gotten out of control lately. My therapist has wanted me to consider meds for over a year. Until now I didn’t want to... concerned that I will lose emotional availability blah blah blah. I’ve been on St. John’s Wort for over two months and it doesn’t seem to be helping. So does anyone have experience with acting while on meds for depression? Which meds? Thanks.

Any Toronto actors out there? by actorneedshelp  •  last post May 29th

I live in Toronto and I don't know what to expect when it comes to auditions in Toronto in terms of audition locations. I am aware of the skype, zoom and self/pre-recorded auditions What I would like to know is, where are the auditions for professional/legitimate shows & movies held here in Toronto which you have to physically attend ? If you feel comfortable enough, please even tell the location/building you had an audition in. In my mind I would love to believe that its either at the CD's office or on-set location, but I know there has to be other locations, so please share your information,it would help out myself and others who im sure are wondering the same thing but too afriad or dont want to be called stupid for asking. (ill take the bullet for this one, you can call me stupid) I've tried researching audition tapes, but there was absolutely no way of telling where they are. Are they in random hotel rooms, studios (pinewood), CD's house/office, agents office, random office.?

How difficult would it be to get into acting if the person suffers from dyslexia? by MrAlexander18  •  last post May 29th

I am asking for my cousin who suffers form dyslexia and would like to start acting. She was going to start in amateur theatre with the local amateur theatre group, but worries that dyslexia would hold her back. What are the chances of being a good actor despite having dyslexia?

Females scenes that not related to sex/romance? by LocoLocksmith  •  last post May 29th

Hey, I’m trying to find a scene to do for class for me and a female actress. She said she wanted to a scene that doesn’t involve any sex/romance. As a male actor I though it’s gonna be easy. Turns out, it’s fricking hard ! Almost every scene that have male and female is romantic. We might just do a scene with her and another actress and even if it’s all-female scene it’s very hard to find something that disconnected from above topics. Anyone have any scenes to recommend? I’m looking for: Addiction Death Parent/child relationship Brother/sister Sister/sister Money issues Got to be from a movie or a play. Personally I started to really feel bad for my fellow actresses. I love so many plays like Amadeus and Hamlet and golden boy and all my sons and I never realized that for the most part the female characters are very shallow or used as a sexual object or always in a relation to male characters. If you can recommend me on plays that wrote females characters better (meaning? Like actual people !) I would love to read them.

Living in LA by keenybopper  •  last post May 29th

Any advice for an actor considering moving to LA? If you have made the move, how did it go for you/was it worth it? I know there are a lot of things to consider!! Also, any resources for living situations with other actors— communities for actors ? :) thanks!

Question about doing theatre by Jerricoda  •  last post May 29th

I was just wondering about whether or not I would have to do theater work (aka plays of some kind) in order to make it as an actor because I personally don't really want to do that and rather just be in movies/shows/whatever but not in plays, does anyone know if I would inevitably have to whether I want to or not or can I just aim for acting in movies?

Help me by Ill_Chocolate_7884  •  last post May 28th

Guys I read stanislavski’s An Actor prepares and now I’m finishing Building a Character but I’m confused by it. Honestly this is starting to feel like a chore for me.. I enjoy studying acting but it’s taking me hours to read and take notes for these books and I can’t even understand really what he’s getting at. It’s like I spend an hour taking notes on a chapter and I come away with only a small idea of a bigger picture.. there has to be an easier way than reading his books to get at the meaning of what he’s saying... what’s the next step or next book I should read from stanislavski after building a character? Plz help is there any one book that’s best to end my readings of his books? Please help

Toronto Actors - Thoughts on Noble Caplan Abrams? by Appropriate_Crab2745  •  last post May 28th

Hi r/acting, I'm not a huge reddit user so forgive me if there is a more appropriate place to make this post... but for any actors based in Toronto, I'm wondering what your thoughts are on the agency Noble Caplan Abrams. I've heard they are reputable but also kind of harsh. I submitted to a bunch of agencies earlier this week and got a response from them and a couple of others, so I'm just wondering if anyone has thoughts on them. Much appreciated :)

New actor - poor & croaky voice stopping me by RiverAndGoat  •  last post May 28th

I am very new to acting, have only done about a dozen beginner night classes a couple of years ago. This time, getting back into it, I want to take a more holistic approach and develop different parts of myself, physcially and mentally. Especially while waiting for classes to start. My old feedback was predominantly my voice and posture. My voice though, is not going anywhere. I'm a male in my late 20's and have been very quiet my whole life and not shown much emotion. My voice is throaty/nasaly, very croaky and soft (regardless of time of day or what I eat, it's just my standard voice). I practice reading monologues and articles, sometimes read a book out loud though my throat gets sore within around 10 mins or less. I try focus on using my chest or even my stomach to generate voice to try get away from my upper throat (default). It doesn't seem to do anything but I'm thinking like using 'hidden' muscles in the gym, eventually, after thinking about them for a few days/weeks, you start to feel them and become controllable. I am trying to figure out how to develop my voice to be more strong, deep, have colour. I know it will take lots of time to get that, but I don't know how to even break out of this croaky, bland voice I have now and I'm concerned about doing things wrong and either hurting my throat or simply being extremely unefficient and wasting time. I suppose the extra concern is because I feel there's a million obstacles to overcome to even be 'up-to-speed' to the 'average' day 1 beginner. I have so much developing to do it's overwhelming.

Any latino actors over 30 on here who can share their experiences after the #oscarssowhite show of protest? by blue-sky_noise  •  last post May 28th

I quit 15 yrs ago because for me, the uncomfortable truth in my past experience was the immediate limitations for me due to race. Back then 99% castings were only for white people. It didn’t even make sense because some roles were minor roles like “girlfriend” or “friend” and race made no sense to focus on. It wasn’t a a period piece or a biopic on a White person. It was minor roles, even in student films I also remember soon after reading that Latinos only get cast 2% of time despite making up 16% of the population. I was upset about it but I kept trying daily to read through endless casting notices hoping it would saying “seeking racially ambiguous” or “open to all types”. But nada. I know hispanic groups have tried to get hollywood to stop focusing on race so much Eventually due to many personal problems + the endless scrolling on backstage and other places that resulted in zero opportunities, I quit Well I’m a 35 yr old hot mess looking to return once my life is more together. I know my age alone will hinder me, but I’m praying things are better race wise? Or am I gonna have it just as bad as 15 yrs ago, endlessly scrolling and getting nowhere?

Where should I take my acting after college? by freewilli2509  •  last post May 28th

So currently I’m about to be in my senior year of college and I didn’t start acting until I got to my college. I’ve always wanted to act throughout my life but I never had the chance to really do it until now and according to multiple professors, students, and many community members I’m really good at it and won actor/performance of the year this past year (don’t worry I don’t have a big head, I’m still humbling myself). I want to get serious about acting but I’m not sure where to go once I graduate with all the acting credits I currently have. I want to go to film school to get better at acting but I don’t know where would be the best place for me to go to school at to get better. Any advice for someone from NC who’s serious about pursuing an acting career? I’m already contempt with have a 9-5 job while trying to get acting roles in the future, I’ve been working since I was 16. And I’m contempt with the likelihood of my career never taking off but my mom told me I gotta do something now when I’m young cause I’m going to deeply regret it when I’m 45 and missed an opportunity of what could’ve been. I know it’s a big dream but what’s the point of it if you’re not gonna dream big.

How do you all go on vacation/take days off? by highpriestesstea  •  last post May 28th

I'm gonna be 100% upfront here - I'm not bringing my mic or any equipment with me to audition while I'm on vacation. Anecdotally, I don't know anyone else who does this. Musicians don't do this. Dancers don't do this. Actors don't do self-tapes on vacation. We need our rest, especially professional voice users. I plan on taking my rest days. Now if I'm spending a month in France, then yeah, I'll bring my gear, but for weekends or even week long, I don't see how potential clients can't hear if I'd be good for their spot by listening to my demo. Or current clients can't plan for my vacation by sending me stuff ahead of time or postponing. So for those who don't audition on the road, how do you tell current clients, agents, or potential clients that you're gone fishing?

Headshot-Age Range-Character Type Feedback by AutoModerator  •  last post May 27th

Use this thread to post your headshots for feedback, get info on your age range/type, find good headshot photographers, ask any questions you may have about headshots. If you are posting a DIY headshot for feedback, and not just a snapshot in order to get feedback on your age range/type/etc, it is advised that you do at least some basic research on what actor headshots look like--composition, framing, lighting. You will find a Google Image search for "actor headshots" to be very helpful for this. Non-professional shots are fine for age/typecasting; please keep in mind that one picture is a difficult way to go about this. Video of you moving and speaking would be ideal, but understandably more difficult to post. For what it's worth, the branding workshop at SAG-AFTRA recommends a five-year age range. That's inclusive, so for example 19-23, 25-29, 34-38, etc.
