Should I join an agent I'm unsure of for the sake of Spotlight? by Creditive • last post Aug 2nd
I've been chatting with an agent about getting signed on their books, but I'm not too sure what to do. In all honesty they aren't a great agent - they don't seem to be getting their actors much work, and what they do get seem to be glorified extra roles. Now obviously I don't sound too keen, but what's making me consider joining is I turn 25 next month, and this agent would be able to sponsor me to be on Spotlight (I've not done a 1+ year drama course and I've only got 2 professional credits, so I'm not eligible for Spotlight). I know a lot of agents aren't taking on new people at the minute, and if they are it's usually either a recent drama school grad or recommendation only. So what do you think? Do I join them for the sake of Spotlight (which I'm guessing will help me get signed by better agents, as many expect you to have spotlight) when I know I have no long term interest in working with this agent? Also, when it comes to being a young performed on Spotlight, can you still get sponsored when you're 25 or are you ineligible the second you turn 25? Cheers for your advice guys, I've been driving myself mad about this trying to figure out what's the smartest choice.

I'm trying to tighten my marketing materials to get signed. For anyone who signed to an agent in the last year, were there things that you did that helped you get signed. I have a reel and resume that is decent. I've seen people with no experience get signed. I know sometimes you have a look. All advice is appreciated. Now, this is the acting world in the 90s, so it's hard now and I know it was 100x tougher than..but fuck me if it isn't still a pain. Imagine taking a day off work, spending your last couple of bucks in the banks taking two buses to get to casting, say three words on a role you aren't going to get, and take those two buses back home. I couldn't have recorded this? I'm glad COVID opened the eyes of actors..allow me to audition from home for the initially casting and call me in for the call-back. Actors have lives, jobs, children to take care of. We can't put our lives on hold for one shitty audition that we won't get.

TL/DR: I like my first acting class well enough. It’s part of my journey. I’ve only been a hand full of times so far. Still I wonder if any other classroom styles will suit me better. X The way my class is set up, everyone performs in front of everyone at the end. You get your script at the beginning of class. You usually have one, rarely two scene partners. He critiques you in front of everyone, and you do a few takes of your scenes. There’s no particular style like Meisner or Adler. I haven’t heard those names once since I’ve been going. This class caters to film/tv actors, though I haven't seen a camera yet. It’s a drop-in format, meeting multiple times per week, but I usually do one day. He usually sits us down and has a somewhat formal chitchat after performances. Here he gives final collective advice. Sometimes he’ll sit at the front and discuss something briefly before we perform or even before we go off with our partners. Can’t say rather or not he did the latter my last session. We get told to read aloud and to record ourselves for at-home practice. He does talk about the regional industry, but it’s all in little tidbits So my first session, there were a few newbies. Before class started he grouped the newbies in a smaller room to talk to us about our plans. I had two partners during my first class. We were reading together in another small room. I asked them what happens next. One answered that we were to going to perform for the class. I asked rather sitting down or standing. One answered standing and that we would just go over blocking then. Then when performances started all the other groups had their blocking together; we did not. My partners were longtime students. I have no idea what they were thinking. But more importantly I don’t know why the teacher didn’t explain the actual structure of the class when speaking with the newbies. After a couple classes I learned that he wanted us to be off book when we perform. I knew that was a goal of course. But I didn’t know that it was THE goal as he just hands us the script without any instruction on technique(memorization, breaking down the script). Even after performance we don’t get that. After my second class, the teacher asked did I have my Actor’s Access page up. I did not. I recently made an account to be nosy. Nothing is in my city for my stats. He, the teacher, already knows I was inexperienced prior to this. Plus acting isn't my sole artistic priority. During my last session, he asked everyone if their AA page was up. I answered no because I had no headshots. He does headshots. He said okay and then moved on to the next person. I’m not the only one without a ready page. He has a room with the lights and backdrops. I have reasons to believe he uses an iPhone as the camera though. I know good photography can be done with an iPhone. After class I said I wanted headshots. His response was short. He told me to figure out my type(s). I’m not going to lie, it sounded really generic, like the advice I could read off here. But he knows me. The examples didn't sound like my strengths. One thing he made clear without saying it was that he wanted me to do the three-type headshot package. He offers single, doubles, and three looks packages. I was considering doing only two looks. The response was really disappointing, especially considering he hounds his class about AA. So what’s the format for your class?

I go to a workshop for television and film acting but I keep being told by people around me, who are not actors or part of the industry in anyway, that the only way I’m going to have a chance in the industry is if I graduate college for theatre acting…?

Disclaimer: I have no prior experience making short films. This is completely experimental and mostly for fun. Looking for an actor who can do a very good French accent (or is a native French speaker), is between 18 - 32, is athletic or slim, and is clean shaven. If you're interested, I can send you the script for the scene and you can try recording yourself acting it out, in a virtual audition. If you'd like to do a live video call with both of us on camera, that's also possible, as well.

Hi all!! I’m very new to all this; so new that I’ve never actually acted before, not been to acting school, not had any form of drama school experience or anything. All I know is I see plenty of actors on screen and think to myself “what a job”. Portraying someone else and bringing characters to life seems like a very rewarding career and something I’ve always toyed with. I’ve recently signed up to Casting Collective and Mad Dog 2020 here in the uk who are agencies for extras/supporting artists to give me an idea of how a set works, what to expect, if I could enjoy the experience etc etc. I guess I have a few part question for the community off the back of this information: - am I starting in the right place? - am I too old to just get into this? (37) - do I need the experience of drama school or acting classes? On a final note, I have seen the website Starnow which looks like an ideal platform to start but does anyone have any experience with this? Thank you so much for taking the time to read my questions/post.

Willis and Ford are both known for being a bit disinterested over the last few decades. So you think they'd ever go meta? Do something really weird and give them a renewed voice? If this is an FAQ, I apologise. I don't think I have some great original idea, I'm really just curious what it would look like putting these two together in some kind of meta way.

Hello! I am an actor . I currently live in Madrid , Spain. I am originally from Canada with Latinamerican roots . I should also add I am black. There are a lot of international movies, TV shows shot in Spain. Its been exciting to see it grow more and more. In 2017 I went from theatre to solely focusing on film and TV. I basically had to start from scratch but I am trying to be positive. Its true that Spain is not a diverse country when it comes to actors you see on TV. Most of them tend to be white. I have gotten a few roles . I got an agent in 2018 and we have been finding good auditions for mayor TV and movies. However I have been paying attention to entertainment news and everytime I hear something is being shot in my city and I haven’t even been called to audition it breaks my heart. Even more frustrating when its an American or British TV show . Most recently I was watching a Tv show on prime “Soulmates” and they shot it in my city with plenty of Hollywood actors and Spanish actors. I didn’t even hear of the audition for this. I keep taking classes, trying to change my reel,stay on top of things. But seeing all those missed opportunities go by makes me feel impotent. I just want to be given a chance to audition . I would love to ask for advice. Sometimes I wonder if its time to change agencies.
