I never did understand the difference. Why need both when you have one or the other?

well, i do not have an agent and I have only been in a few shorts. I figure a manager could do for me what I am not able to do myself.

Acquiring an agent or a manager is the same basic process. A well connected manager can be a lot of help to a young actor, but you have to keep in mind that those are pretty few and far between. Agent's are heavily regulated (at least in NY and CA) and as such, you're less likely to find one that's 'shady' in any meaningful sense.

Manager's on the other hand are not regulated at all. Anyone can put up a sign and call themselves a manager and some of the contracts that they offer can be pretty ridiculous, as well as difficult to get out of. Me personally, I've never been comfortable seeing young actors taking on management, as I've never seen any real meaningful results from those relationships first hand. That's not to say it doesn't happen, just that I haven't seen it myself.

My two-cents says to go out and start working on booking your own work. When you are pretty well established as an actor that books work, the managers and agents start looking for you.

Hope this helps and best of luck out there!

thanks for the advice. I have taken an acting class and am now majoring in theatre with some classes in communications. my ultimate goal is to transfer to a state university and get a double major there. I've learned a little and am now putting of the idea of getting a manager and am focusing on my craft. I don't live in LA or NYC so acting jobs are not as frequent, but I have found some resources.

I'm majoring in Video Production. What year are you in? I'm a freshman. What are your plans after college? During?
