Great list. I've read it before but it's still a good read regardless.

I had that problem, even off stage..I tend to not look people in the eyes when having intense conversations.

You just have to force yourself to do it. It's a lot easier when doing comedy because comedy makes more of a direct connection with your audience via their reactions (laughing and so on.)

You really just have to work at it..being comfortable with eye contact comes with confidance, and time too.

There was a time when doing regular conversations I couldn't look the person in the eyes.. Im good at it now.

So I'm guessing the "pretending the audience members are cabbages" trick doesn't work, then?

I think you should look the audience in the eye and remember it's not YOU doing the looking and connecting it's the character you become at that moment of connection.

I think in any show to be successfull the audience should feel involed in it. If one can mangae that the show will be a success.

Great thread: bookmarked it

hehe i knw this site ive been actually reading stuff from this site ive learned a lot from this site actors should really ivest in books if i remember correctly erric morris mentioned that actors should read all acting books thay can read and a teacher of mine said we should not stop learning new stuff even if its not about acting bacause we might need it one day.learning acting is a lifelong experience thats what they say and i think so to we should read and learn everything we can and be more observant than normal people are.

I get uncomfortable after long bouts of eye contact myself. I think the trick is that when you start feeling uncomfortable, that means you are putting your attention on yourself, instead of on the other person...where it should be. Just refocus yourself. Just accept the fact that you got uncomfortable, and then, without harshing on yourself mentally, just put your attention back on what the other person is saying, or how they are behaving.

In response to the eye contact questions, if you break it down like this, it might help. When you are making eye contact with someone, you are giving them your full attention. It's only when you bring your attention back to yourself that it trips us all up. And when you are talking to someone, you have a need. For example, you need them to do something, you need them to hear you, you need sympathy from them, etc. The stronger the need, and the more you really fill up with it and make it important, the less you will focus on yourself...because you need something from THEM. If you break the scene down, and you really fill up with what you want from the other person, then that will supercede your thoughts on yourself and how you look, because you will be too busy trying to get what you want, and you won't have any room in your head to think about yourself.

Hope that helps.
