| The Number One Rule Is... | | Is the number one rule to remember in acting, specifically Screen acting, never look at your camera?
What is YOUR personal No. 1 when you're acting?
If there have already been threads posted about this, it'd be great for you to point me to some of them. I tried searching but couldn't find a clear answer... |

| Re: The Number One Rule Is... | | aside from the one you already daid "never look at the camera", the other one i can think of is . "if it goes wrong and you can carry on, do so"
sometimes there's nothing worse than an actor going "ooh, can we do that again? my shoe is coming off" or similar. |

| Re: The Number One Rule Is... | | Well Michael Cain has made a forty year career out of "looking at the camera" it truly depends on the style of the show. He, as well as Jude Law among others, have used "asides" directly to the camera to great effect. I don't think acting can be broken down to "tricks" like juggling. It is essentially storytelling, conducted in the first person or as I like to tell my students "Pretending on Purpose" check out dramorama.com for some great tips! |

| Re: The Number One Rule Is... | | I think it all depends on the style of the film being shot. If the director does not WANT an aside, then that would be a pretty big error on the part of the actor to do one.
I agree with you ceno...some of the best takes are the ones where the actors just "went with it" |

| Re: The Number One Rule Is... | | wow i NEVER knew i'm not supposed to look at the camera.
If its like a commercial and you're talking to the viewers, where do you look, like above the camera? etc?!

| Re: The Number One Rule Is... | | no, in commercials, you can look at the camera. it's just in movies and TV shows that you're not supposed to look at the camera, and in plays you're not supposed to look the audience directly in the eye. |

I'd say that's the #1.
One time I saw a 'when harry met sally', where in the middle of the scene the actor farted. It was a faint fart, where you're not sure whether you heard it right. The actor, who wasn't very experienced, says: "Sorry." What he meant was: Sorry for messing up this scene. When I looked at the monitor he was terrified. The actress, however, followed that rule and continued with her next line: "oh, I forgot, you're a man." Which had everybody furiously trying not to laugh. Even the director, who was also an experienced actor could just barely contain his laughing.
When we watched the scene back, thanks to her reaction his "sorry" meant "sorry for farting in front of you in a restaurant".
I liked this version better than the real when harry met sally scene. |
