Default Learning from the experts?

If we watched movies (I'm sure we all do), can we learn acting techniques from there? Stuffs like: don't show your bum towards the camera/audience....

I'm sure you could pick up on a few things, but directors tend to have their own style when it comes to positioning and all of the other stuff you're refering to.

When I'm really bored, or if it's a movie I've already seen, sometimes I watch it with the text at the bottom (as well as sound turned on.) This way you can read the flat text and then see how they decided to act it out. Usually, most actors are not special enough to be able to change the text, so you are pretty much reading the script in real time at the bottom. I've learned a few tips & tricks from watching that.

If you watch carefully you can sometimes see when someone messes up.. But, thats only sometimes.. I never turned the tv down with the text at the bottom yet.. I'll probably go do that today when I watch the Ben Stiller Polly movie

Thanks... never thought of reading the text and watching how they acted the part...
The other way of learning is through watching NGs that some movies play out after/during the credits...

Michael Caine taught an acting class which explained how to act for film as compared to acting for the stage. I think there's a video available which is at least 10 years old, but it has a lot of relevant points. I don't remember the title though.

You can also learn a lot from watching foreign films and listening to the dialogue and observing their acting.
