Talking As-if'ing and Realism

Has anyone heard of As-If'ing?
I did a short course which used this technique quite often to help bring a sort of realism to dialogues but i cant really find much information on it.

Since i need to do a monologue soon im scared incase i over act, i try my best not to perfect anything i do because it looks too false if i prepare it too well but also im scared incase i cant potray the story in a realistic way which is why i loved as-ifing.

Because i only did a short course with this technique i never really learned that much besides the basics, does anyone know anything else that might help me with this technique?
