Default I'm frustrated- what should I do?

Hi everyone,

For some time now I've been very frustrated. Comedy comes very natural to me and I would really love the challenge to take on a dramatic role. The problem is, becuase I'm a short guy all the directors I work with typecast me and give me the comedic roles. Don't get me wrong, I love playing comedy but I feel I need to expand my horizons and prove to myself that I can take on a dramatic role. What can I do? Is there any way I can get directors to stop typecasting me?

Well, there probably isn't much you can do....you look a certain part, you'll always get it. My GF ALWAYS seems to get typecast as an older woman (shes college age) so I know how you feel. It's frustrating for her as well.

I'd recommend that you write a short film, something that highlights your dramatic ability. For one, you will be doing the drama you wanted to do, and for two, you could potentially have a vehicle that will allow others to see you in all your dramatic splendor! Maybe then, they'll be able to see past their narrow stereotyping views. Best of luck!

Well, ok here. We need to figure things out. Are you constantly auditioning for comedies? Do you ever audition for dramatic plays? If you keep auditioning for comedies, the CD's will eat you up when it comes to playing the "whacky goofball" guy simply because of your height. And if your chubby or stocky, even better. Its the Jason Alexander syndrome. I would suggest you brush up on your dramatic monologue technique and start showing off your dramatic chops when auditioning. But like I said, if you're auditioning for comedic plays, you're gonna get a comedic role. Try branching out on your technique. I hate to be the one to tell ya this, but if you're only being cast as a comedic actor, its probably because you portray the "type" in your acting ability. Have you ever tried playing any of your characters with a sense of sadness? Maybe if you dig deeper into your technique, and find the drama within the comedy, CD's will take notice in your range. Just a thought.
