Default Guns on stage

I'm in a production of Iolanthe at the moment, and saw something that worried me during rehearsal. At one point during Private Willis' song, the director has him pointing his gun into the audience. Is it just me, or is that a huge mistake on the director's part?

Note: The firing pin has been removed, etc., so there is no danger of hurting anyone, but the audience doesn't know that.

Wait a minute, the gun is real... This is stage right? Its supposed to be a prop, a representation of the real thing. You can never be safe with a real gun. My advice for one thing, is to talk with that man about replacing that thing with a prop... I wouldnt even trust it pointing at an actor, let alone the audience!

Bringing the audience into the play that far, is insane at best.. a BIG no-no...
That director should be quietly beaten to a pulp in a dimly lit alley, and have his head shoved into a toilet, and the thing flushed a couple times, to wake him up to a little reality and common decency... Pointing a gun at the audience would have cut and scared a few minds.. and maybe brought back some serious bad memories for some who had been assaulted with a weapon.. and could have even made a few of the audience mess themselves in their seats.. and as well could have even caused an untimely heart attack... The audience is there for entertainment, not to be bullied... That idiot was screwing with people's lives there... You gotta know your limitations, and the audience's limitations...
