Default Audition Research

I have my first non-school/church related audition coming up. It's an open call at a some what prominent community theatre, and I'm auditioning via cold reading. My question is, since I know the name of the play, and it's all in my age range, should I look it up and prepare to get into either of the possible roles, or would that ruin the whole fresh outlook on my potential character thing. I realize that the casting director/s is/are looking for a specific role, but what if I had researched all the possible parts, recognized the character immediately, and nailed it, but the director/s wanted a fresh spin on the character?

In short- To research, or not to research, that is the question.

Research. Definitely research. If you KNOW what role you are trying out for, then research THAT one as best you can. If you think you are right for another part, then put some secondary research into that and mention it to the director during your audition. But you are better served, in my opinion, being ultimately prepared for ONE role, than semi prepared for 2.

Thanks, but I don't know any specific part, yet. So I guess I'll do my research, pick two or three plausible parts and get to work. It's a good thing the audition isn't 'til mid-January. Once again, thanks for the feedback.

yeh it may even impress them that you already know part of the roles in the story. you could even talk about your views if you get time
