| new, planning to move to LA, advice? | | hi im new to the boards, im 17 right now and i want to move out to LA after i graduate high school, i don't know anybody in my senior class that is going out to LA, to pursue acting (I go to an arts school) so i'm kinda worried about going out there by myself and setting up, was wondering if anyone can offer some advice about the cost of living, getting an agent, auditions in LA (how often?) , good cheap places to stay, where i can network with local actors, etc. anything that can prove useful, right now i'm trying to convince some friends to come out with me, cause its always better to have people you know in a new city, just kinda worried im just going to throw myself ot somewhere and have no one, so thanks for the time |

Everything you need to know is in a video called coming to hollywood.
it talks about areas to live in, different acting coaches and important events and more. this video really taught me alot. heres the link www.comingtohollywood.net |

| Re: new, planning to move to LA, advice? | | "throwing yourself out there".. is like the baby spider who leaves the nest by tossing out a long string into the wind... He hangs onto his perch.. and he hangs on tighter and tighter as the wind tugs at his rope... then he lets go, and flies to his new life, enjoying the ride, and ready for anything and everything.. where he will take opportunity as it happens... A new "king of the hill" about to land someplace new and exciting... After he lands, he surveys his new turf... then gets creative, in building his first net, to catch diner... |

| Re: new, planning to move to LA, advice? | | I did what you are planning to do about ten years ago. It was over 5 years before I got any kind of paid work. My advice is to come out here with the idea that you are gonna train your ass off. Get into a great acting school. Sanford Meisner Center is where I went (2 years of your life will be GONE to this class, but you will come out "ready")
There is a place called the Actor's Network...you can google them, not sure the address. If you can afford the $50 (?) a month then it's a fantastic resource for actors. You get studio lot info, casting director info, agent info, pretty much whatever you need.
Networking in clubs and "hot spots" is something that I was, nor am currently, good at....I have chosen a different path. But when you get here, people will know them.
Cost of living is pretty expensive. My brother just moved into a studio, and I think he's paying close to $1000 a month.
It's definitely scary to move out here, but once you get here, and once you get acclimated, I'm sure you'll do fine. Bottom line, though, KEEP training. NEVER stop training. The talent pool here is HUGE....your competition is fierce.
Hope that helps. |

| Re: new, planning to move to LA, advice? | | Well, I think it has to do with the fact that just because I MOVED to Los Angeles, didn't mean I was READY. I had done theatre all through high school, and I took a year of acting in college, but when I moved, it became very clear that I was quite UNDERtrained. So I trained for a few years, and then after awhile I went on some auditions and began to book work. But there are catch 22's all over this business. You can't get a SAG card, unless you do SAG work.....an agent won't see rep you unless you have done work, but don't you need an agent to get work? I had to get lucky and break through all those barriers.....and that takes time. Trust me, I wish it didn't take that long! Some people make money much faster....it's not the norm though. |

| Re: new, planning to move to LA, advice? | | There's three basic ways to do a thing...
1) You can stumble through it...
2)You can lag behind it, making you feel like everything is too big for you,
3) Or you can posture yourself ahead of it all, and things will just fall into place, like a puzzle completing itself... It's all in your attitudes, and your fears and confidences...
If you are ahead of it, you'll find yourself saying and doing the right things even before you think about it... It's how the critters live life... It's how great actors live their job and their lives... Then you aren't working, you're just having fun, like ole Dean Martin did life... "He did it his way"... |
