Default Does doing TV movies help an actor's career?

Why do big time movie stars do TV movies every now and then? Does it help or hurt their careers? Do they do it because they are running out of money to support their, um, hobbies?

While it's nice to see some good acting on TV every once and a while, at the same time, when I see a BigScreenActor come to the small screen, I can't help but think "washed out"

That's what I think when I see leading males who were in these huge blockbuster movies years ago... do lifetime movies. The reality is, even a blockbuster actor needs to practice and always make sure they are at the top of their game. Doing a TV movie could just be a tool to allow them to practice on a lesser viewed movie etc. But, usually this is not the case and that's why you don't see people such as Tom Cruise on the small screen

When I see someone who has played in big movies do a movie on Lifetime, I start to wonder whats going on with them.. But, on a few occasions I have seen a person who played in a lifetime movie star in an upcoming big movie. But, thats on some..

Work is work so actor takes whatever job pays. I think people tend to forget that acting is still a job. There's still the chance of winning an emmy or some other type of award for tv.

Actors like George Clooney do movies on both the big and small screen because they do it for the role, and reputation. Also cause both pay in cash

I agree with Artemis, actors do any kind of work to stay busy and make more money. It doesnt matter where the movie is shown. Im sure they do it for their personal interests. A list movie stars are in a lot of small independant films because they either friended the people who are involved, or they may be directing/producing it too, ect. Personally, If I were a huge movie star I would still try to be in as many movies as possible, if it interested me. Try to tackle as many characters as possible

i think its just to play the wide range of roles that are offered to them and to test their skills for themselves. playing the same type of roles doesnt really chalenge them as much as playing differnt roles does. and plus if they do pick a role they havent played before its best to mess up on tv than a movie.
