Default Directing School

Does anyone know of any directing schools in England?

Or even any good ones throughout north america that offer a good directing education?

I don't know of specific directing schools but would encourage you to just get started! Every book on directing that I have ever read (100's) and every class I've ever taken (dozens) leads me to this conclusion, every director directs the way they direct. There may be common threads but if you are a director you will have to find that connection within yourself! Checkout Dramorama.com

Directing in what medium, Chris? Movies are very different from stage, very different from radio, very different from TV. They all have one thing in common: you pretty much have to be a master actor to direct, and be competent in the technical end of your medium. You can't direcxt onstage if you know nothing about stage lighting, for example.

To say that you need to be a master actor would negate the work of dozens of Oscar and Tony winning directors, many of whom tried acting in their childhood with dismal results and never returned.

The primary prerequisite of a director is to have a unique and interesting vision of how to tell a story, and as I have said before the only way to develop that "voice" is to do it. Read Rebel WIthout a Crew for some eye opening examples, or for the stage an old book called Act One by Moss Hart, half of the legendary Kuafman and Hart of Broadway fame. Both of these books outline very uniqie journeys into the world of theatre and film. This is not brain surgery, when we stink out loud no one dies, they just don't buy as many tickets.
