| Starting out acting | | Hey everyone, i'm new to the forum here.
I have always wanted to be an actor, I dont want to be apart of everyday life associated to everyday things. The town that I live in is a very cozy, plain, open area that is slowly expanding. Every one here, my parents, friends, family love it here. But it just dosnt feel right for me, I want people to know my name. I want peopel to know who I am and all about me, I want peopel to talk about me. A dream of dreamers, I know.
But this is all I have ever wanted, I am willing to give up everything for this if I could.
any ways... the area I live in isnt exactly the primary place to start an acting career, I know I would have to start out small, a background actor or what ever.
I am just curious as to how I would go about making a profile or remuse. I have no idea how the industry works, as I said there isn't much about this where I live. I know I would need a talent agent, and maby some professional pictures taken. I am just wondering about where to go for these, and the price of all of this.

| Re: Starting out acting | | First you need to get into acting class.
Wanting people to know you isn't enough. It's definitely fuel to get you going, though. But you MUST acquire the skills.
Second, go to where the acting jobs are. Theatres in nearby towns, most likely.
Third, gain as much experience from this as possible.
Fourth, if you are ready to enter into the rat race, move to a town where the bigger theatres are, or where television and movie productions are.
Fifth, get PROFESSIONAL headshots. They MUST be good.
Sixth, keep training. Never stop training.
Seventh, go to a bookstore, find out who the agents are in your town, and submit, and follow up, and then submit some more....can't get discouraged, because this sometimes takes time.
Eighth, pursue work on your own...don't just wait for your agent.
Ninth, Never give up.
The costs: Training is going to cost money....sometimes $200-400 a month. For the good ones.
Headshots, done professionally, can cost $200 for the shoot, and then $100+ for the copies to be made.....that $100 keeps growing though as you need more in time.
And then the cost of living, and the cost of your free time.
LUCK plays a HUGE part in being successful, so know that going in, and make sure that you ENJOY acting, because if you don't, then the process will be a miserable one.
Hope that helps! Good luck to you! |

I hope you don't want to be an actor JUST so people know who you are... I imagine that might be the wrong way to go about this job...

It's going to take you ten years of solid, daily work in a marketplace that supports your chosen profession, to just have a shot at 'making it' as a performer.
Seriously.
Theater, Film, Television, Stand-Up, Dance...you pick, but it's going to to take you at least ten years, I guarantee it.
If you are ok with that, your first step is to go to an acting school or a theater and learn how to act. Headshots, agents and all that stuff you'll figure out as you go, I assure you. All those things are about marketing, and right now, you honestly don't have anything to market. Use that money for learning your craft, not to help pay some photographer's rent.
If you do decide to pursue acting professionally, always remember this...if you don't quit, you can't fail. Hang on to that, work hard and you might just do it. |

| Re: Starting out acting | | Yes and another few words of advice, you can't ever fail being an actor. There's no such thing. The only way you "fail" is by giving up. Don't give up and you should be determined and strong.
