Default Quick Question guys...

I want to be a professional actor.
Now to do this, do I need to know how to sing?
I know I am going to do plays as I gain experience, but since I don't know how to sing can I only do plays? It's not obligatory that I must do musicals also right? It's not that I am afraid to sing in front of people, it's just that I want to act in front of people, not sing. That's all right right?

Well, sounds like you need you to better prepare. The old adage states... if you can speak, you can sing. But the doesn't mean that you are a good singer. Singing like speak has to be mastered. Sometimes actors are called to step out of one's self and become someone else. Have you been watching the Grease Academy try outs. Now there's a humbling situation. Many try out, only a few are needed. And most of the time you never really know what they are looking for. So, my friend, bite the bullet and learn to sing as well as act. You'll never know when someone will offer you a great job!

But the answer to your question is, NO. You do not NEED to be able to sing well. There are many roles out there that do not require singing. I participate in musicals for my community theatre but my director knows from speaking to me that my wish is not to sing in front of the audience. I am not ready for that kind of thing. So I get only speaking roles.

The simple answer is, NO, you do not need to, but sometimes, it may help.

Okay thanks guys.
It won't be hard to learn how to sing. But right now I really want to focus on acting. To me that seems more important than learning how to sing. Ahh I'll sort out my priorities.
