I've been wondering if I am ready to take this step...and the fees are scary right now...but it seems like the next step, and such a big one...what are the big bonuses of joining? I'm in Miami, and the industry here isn't as strong as NY or LA of course...any tips?

There is a really Good post that discusses when to join unions and when to get an agent. I read it and thought it was pretty good advice. Ill search for it and see if I can link it for you. You may want to search for it to.
