Default Employment vs. UnEmployment

Hey folks,

I have a question. Is it me or does it seem like to only way that an aspiring actress can get an audition is if they quit their job? I mean it seems like all of the audition times are during the week in work hours. How do I audition if I have to be at work? What do you think, should I quit my job or what? HELP!!!

Default Re: Employment vs. UnEmployment

I guess I've been lucky because the community theatre here auditions for two days at 7-9pm... so even when I work late (I get off at 8:30pm) I can still make it to the tail-end of the audition... which is better than missing it altogether :/ and because there's two days the odds are better that I won't work late BOTH nights.

you don't have to quit your job but it would be nice to find a more flexible one or one where the boss understands you're pursuing an acting career...

Post Re: Employment vs. UnEmployment

I work at night (graveyard shift from 11:30pm - 8am) but that's not for everyone. Some of my friends do a variety of free-lance, consultant gigs whereby they have mucho scheduling flexibility. The perceived employment vs. unemployment conflict exists when the artist has limited skills/talents (outside of SHOWBIZ) and/or the artist refuses to wear other hats in the job market.

(Remember the Caribbean joke, "How many jobs ya got, man?") For performing artists, a healthy basketful of various skills and talents helps us butter-the bread or bring home the bacon from our survival job (s). (Book recommendation: What Color is Your Parachute? by Richard N. Bolles)

"Acting is imitation of life" and whatever you EXPERIENCE in life is "brought to the table" during performance. BREAK-A-LEG!"
