Re: How does one become the charcter? | | I think that "becomming" a character is misleading. The bottom line is whether or not the audience can suspend their disbelief while watching you, and "see" the character.
I do this by researching the heck out of the part. The writer knows EXACTLY who this character is, and it's your job as the actor to discover that. It's like mining for nuggets of character.
Once I get a sense of who this character is, I create a backstory that is congruent to what's happening in the script; a character history. But it's all based on feelings. How the character felt about different parts of his life, and how it got him to be where he is now (at the beginning of the script)
Then it's just a matter of making acting choices based on how that character would behave in those situations. It's how the character goes about achieving his objectives that makes an audience SEE the character. I'm generally a nice person, if I were single and asking a girl out on a date, odds are I would be extremely nervous and stammer through it. But if the character I'm playing is pompous and confident, then I would build myself up in my mind, and I would feel as though I was doing the girl a favor by asking her out. It's still ME playing the part, but because it's ME feeling confident and superior, the audience will see the pompous character. I don't have to BECOME a different human being. Just "me" under different circumstances. |
