Depends on your level of experience. If you are "ready" for SAG work, and have credits to support that, then definitely join the union.

If you need more experience, there is a lot more, and a much better chance of getting, non union work.

I'm not a member of Equity, so I'm not sure the pro's and con's there. But as a member of SAG and AFTRA, I can tell you that the AMOUNT of work dwindles quite fast when you join the union, (mostly by people who are known or who have extensive credits) so the competition in that arena really gets intense.
